Effect of mechanical compression on the prevalence of proximal deep venous thrombosis as assessed by magnetic resonance venography
Ryan MG, Westrich GH, Potter HG, Sharrock N, Maun LM, Macaulay W, Katkin P, Sculco TP, Salvati EA.100 patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive either mechanical compression on the lower extremities or only prophylactic stockings to determine effects on proximal deep venous thrombosis. Postoperatively, the mechanical compression group had significantly lower rates of positive venograms and rates of occlusive thrombi compared to the stocking group.
