Arthrodesis versus Mayo resection: The management of the first metatarsophalangeal joint in reconstruction of the rheumatoid forefoot
J Bone Joint Surg Br. 2006 Jul;88(7):914-9.31 patients with rheumatoid arthritis of the forefoot were randomized to undergo either a Mayo resection or an arthrodesis. The main outcomes measured were pain, incapacity, deformity of the foot and functional outcomes examining load distribution. By the end of the 6 year study period, there were no significant differences in the major outcome measurements between the Mayo resection or arthrodesis groups.
