Effect of Manual Lymphatic Drainage After Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Arch Phys Med Rehabil. 2016 May;97(5):674-8260 patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were randomized to receive either five manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) treatments or a placebo treatment in addition to their rehabilitation therapy. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of MLD on knee swelling and the consequences of knee swelling from a TKA procedure after 3 months. Findings indicated no significant differences between the two groups for knee swelling, or any outcomes associated with knee swelling other than a significantly lower knee passive flexion contracture in the MLD group compared to the placebo group at 3 months.
