Comparative effects of teriparatide and risedronate in glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in men: 18-month results of the EuroGIOPs trial

OE Journal. 2013;1(13):14 J Bone Miner Res. 2013 Jun;28(6):1355-68. doi: 10.1002/jbmr.187092 men with glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIO) were randomized to receive either daily injections of 20 ug teriparatide or weekly oral tablets of 35 mg risedronate to determine the effects of these treatments on improvements in bone mineral density (BMD), as assessed with dual X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) and high-resolution quantitative computed tomography (HRQCT). Results indicated that, although both treatments were generally similar at 6 months, improvements in bone mineral density significantly favoured the teriparatide group, compared to the risedronate group at 18 months. Similar trends were observed for vertebral strength and stiffness. Complications and adverse events were also similar for both groups.
