OrthoEvidence Journal (OE Journal) - ACE Report
OE Journal. 2022;10(2):9 J Am Acad Orthop Surg. 2021 Oct 1;29(19): e979-e992.What this means for my practice?
A single low molecular weight hyaluronic acid injection provides superior pain, range of motion, and quality of life improvement vs. physical therapy in patients with supraspinatus tendinopathy. This study was limited by the lack of investigation regarding the optimal dose, lack of a placebo group, and short follow up time.
Study Summary
Fifty-six patients with supraspinatus tendinopathy were randomized to receive a single injection of low molecular-weight hyaluronic acid (n=28) or 12 weeks of physical therapy (n=28). Outcome of interest included pain at rest and during activity, range of motion, disability scores, and quality of life. Results revealed significantly greater improvement in shoulder pain at rest and during activities, as well as a greater improvement in shoulder motion and quality of life with hyaluronic acid vs. physical therapy.
