Syndesmosis fixation in supination-external rotation ankle fractures. Long-Term results of a prospective randomised studyTwenty four patients with unstable syndesmosis undergoing surgical fixation of supination-external rotation type ankle fractures were randomized to receive syndesmotic screw fixation (n=13) or no screw fixation (n=11). The primary outcome was function measured with the Olerud-Molander Ankle Outcome Score (OMAS). Secondary outcomes of interest included visual analogue scales (VAS) for pain and function as well as radiographic measurements. At long-term follow-up (mean 9.7 years), there was no significant differences in OMAS scores between groups. Similarly, there was no difference in VAS pain or function scores or radiographic outcomes.
