Long term comparison of both surgical vs non-surgical treatment of patellar dislocation .

Treatment with and without initial stabilizing surgery for primary traumatic patellar dislocation. A prospective randomized study

J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2009 Feb;91(2):263-73

40 patients with primary acute patellar dislocations were randomized to receive treatment via either surgical stabilization or non-surgical treatment using a patellar orthosis. At a median of 7 year follow-up, there was a significantly reduced rate of re-dislocation and few subluxations in the surgical intervention group, indicating an increase in stability. To accompany this finding there were no differences in subjective symptoms or activity limitation at the final follow-up.
