The effect of local injection of tranexamic acid into peri-articular tissue versus drain clamping in total knee arthroplasty: a randomized controlled trial

One hundred and twenty patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive local tranexamic acid injections (n=60) or tranexamic acid through a drain with drain clamping (n=60). The primary outcome measure of interest was calculated total blood loss. Secondary outcomes of interest included drained blood loss, hidden blood loss, D-dimer levels, post-operative knee pain, range of motion, and leg circumference. Results revealed no significant differences in calculated total blood loss between the two groups, however, drained blood loss was significantly higher in the local tranexamic acid group. No differences in all remaining secondary outcomes were observed.
