Local Infiltration Analgesia + Dexamethasone For Pain Management After Total Joint Arthroplasty .
Dexamethasone as additive of local infiltration analgesia reduces opioids consumption after simultaneous bilateral total hip or knee arthroplasty: a randomized controlled double-blind trial.
J Orthop Surg Res . 2023 Sep 22;18(1):715.108 patients undergoing elective primary simultaneous bilateral total hip or knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive either local infiltration analgesia (LIA) with dexamethasone (DEX) (n=54) or active LIA plus saline (n=54). The primary outcome of interest was total morphine consumption at 24 hours. Secondary outcomes of interest included total morphine consumption at 48 and 72 hours, pain at rest and with activity on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Dezocine use, and the incidence of adverse events. Total morphine consumption, nausea on postoperative days (POD) 0 and 1, and vomiting on POD 0 were all significantly lower in the dexamethasone group. All other outcomes at all time points were similar between the two groups.
