A Randomized Control Trial Comparing Local Autografts and Allografts in Single Level Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion Using a Stand-Alone Cage.
Asian Spine J. 2021 Dec;15(6): 817-824.Thirty-two patients undergoing a single level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion procedure for a non-traumatic spinal injury were randomized to receive a local autograft (n=16) or an allograft (n=16) for the filling of the stand-alone cage. Outcomes of interest included arm and neck pain on a Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), the Neck Disability Index (NDI) score, the 2-item short form health survey (SF-12), fusion status, and lateral disc height. Outcomes were assessed up to 12 months post-operation. Results revealed significantly favourable arm and neck pain scores at 6 and 12 months follow up, as well as superior NDI and SF-12 scores at 12 months, in the local autograft group. No significant differences in disc height or fusion status were observed.
