The effect of local anaesthetic on post-operative pain with wound instillation via a catheter for paediatric orthopaedic extremity surgery

40 paediatric patients (aged 1-12) were randomized to determine the efficacy of regional anaesthetic administration for post-operative analgesia in orthopaedic extremity surgeries. Patients received local injections of either bupivacaine anaesthetic (study group) or control seurm physiologic (control group), and were followed-up for 48 hours postoperatively for outcomes of pain, opioid requirement, and incidence of postoperative complications. Results indicated that pain was significantly reduced in the study group, and that patients of the study group required less additional opioid analgesic.
