Liposomal bupivacaine reduces opiate consumption after rotator cuff repair in a randomized controlled trial

55 patients scheduled for arthroscopic repair of a full-thickness rotator cuff tear were randomized to a multimodal analgesia regimen with or without the addition of intraoperative liposomal bupivacaine infiltration. Patients were assessed for daily pain scores and narcotic consumption over the first 5 days after surgery. Results demonstrated significantly lower pain scores for the first 2 days postoperatively, and significantly lower narcotic consumption over the first 5 days after surgery, in the liposomal bupivacaine group compared to the control group.
