Short-term outcomes of local infiltration anaesthetic in total knee arthroplasty: a randomized controlled double-blinded controlled trial

50 patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive either perioperative local infiltration analgesia (LIA) or placebo administration. The purpose of this study was to determine if LIA was associated with significantly reduced length of hospital stay and postoperative pain (in addition to increased patient satisfaction and range of motion) when compared to placebo. Results demonstrated comparable outcomes at all evaluation time points and up to six weeks post-surgery, suggesting that LIA did not significantly alter postoperative outcomes of interest.
