Lateral versus cross pinning in paediatric supracondylar humerus fractures: a meta-analysis of randomized control trials
ANZ J Surg. 2021 May;91(5): 980-985.Eleven randomized controlled trials containing 900 paediatric patients with supracondylar humerus fractures were included in this meta-analysis comparing lateral pinning and cross-wire pinning for fracture fixation. The pooled outcomes of interest were the rate of loss of reduction and the rate of iatrogenic ulnar nerve injury. Results of this meta-analysis revealed significantly lower risk of loss of reduction in the cross-wire pinning group compared to lateral pinning (p=0.027). The risk of iatrogenic ulnar nerve injury was not significantly different between the two groups (p=0.065); yet, in the per-protocol analysis, the risk was significantly lower in the lateral pinning group (p=0.032).
