Intravenous Versus Topical Tranexamic Acid in Total Knee Arthroplasty: Both Effective in a Randomized Clinical Trial of 640 Patients
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2018 Jun 20;100(12):1023-1029664 patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty were randomized to either topical tranexamic acid or intravenous tranexamic acid. Patients were assessed for total blood loss, postoperative blood loss, and the incidence of transfusion. Results demonstrated that despite the statistically significantly lower total and postoperative blood loss in the intravenous group, there was no significant difference in the incidence of postoperative transfusion between groups.
