Krill Oil for Knee Osteoarthritis: A Randomized Clinical Trial.
OrthoEvidence Journal (OE Journal) - ACE Report
OE Journal. 2024;12(21):23 JAMA . 2024 Jun 18;331(23):1997-2006.What this means for my practice?
Krill oil supplementation does not provide significant relief for knee pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis and effusion-synovitis, suggesting it should not be recommended for this purpose. Limitations include the potential inadequacy of the 2 g/day dose to produce substantial anti-inflammatory effects, lack of dietary control over other omega-3 intake, and the MRI methodology, which did not differentiate between effusion and synovitis. Additionally, the study's findings may not generalize to those without significant knee effusion or synovitis.
Study Summary
Two hundred sixty-two patients with knee osteoarthritis and significant knee pain with effusion-synovitis were randomized to receive 2 g/day krill oil (n=130) or a matching placebo (n=132). The primary outcome was change in knee pain, assessed using the visual analog scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes included effusion-synovitis volume, hand and back pain, function, and quality of life. Outcomes where assessed over 24-weeks. Overall, the study found no significant difference in knee pain reduction between the krill oil and placebo groups (P=0.94).
