Acute Effect of Kinesiology Taping on Muscle Activation, Functionality and Proprioception in Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
Percept Mot Skills . 2024 Apr;131(2):446-468.Forty patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive either kinesiology taping with facilitation (n=20) or placebo taping with no tension (n=20). The primary outcome of interest was muscle activation of the rectus femoris. Secondary outcomes of interest included functionality (Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), Five Times Sit-to-Stand Test (5TSTS)) and proprioception (joint position sense). Outcomes were assessed before and 30 minutes after taping. Overall, the results of the study revealed no significant change in muscle activation in either group. However, there were improvements in proprioception in both knees of the kinesiology taping group compared to the placebo group. The findings suggest that while kinesiology taping does not affect muscle activation, it may improve proprioception in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
