Comparison of Functional and Radiological Outcomes of Transverse Patellar Fractures Fixed with Tension Band Fixation Using Cannulated Screws and Kirschner Wires: A Prospective Randomized Study
Indian J Orthop. 2021 Aug 30;56(3): 369-376Sixty patients with transverse patellar fractures undergoing operative fixation with tension band wiring technique were randomized to receive K-wire fixation (n=30) or 4.5mm cannulated screw fixation (n=30). The primary outcomes of interest were radiographic union, range of motion, function and complication rates. The cannulated screw group demonstrated significantly better postoperative range of motion at up to 12 weeks follow-up. The cannulated screw group also demonstrated earlier radiographic union. No differences in functional outcomes as measured by the Knee Society Score were noted. Hardware complications were lower in the cannulated screw group.
