Isometric Quadriceps Exercises for Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis: A Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Knee Joint Position Flexion versus Extension
Rehabil Res Pract . 2022 Aug 23;2022:2690871.Thirty patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive either isometric quadriceps training with knee extension (n=15) or isometric quadriceps training with knee flexion (n=15). Outcomes such as pain and knee function were measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis (WOMAC), respectively after 4 weeks. There was a statistically significant improvement in WOMAC stiffness scores in the knee extension group at 4 weeks when compared to the knee flexion group. Overall, VAS and WOMAC scores decreased over time within both groups from baseline to 4 weeks.
