2016 ISASS Meeting : Impact of Age on Patient Outcomes after Cervical Disc Arthroplasty or Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion: Comparison at 5-Year Follow-up

575 patients with cervical degenerative disease were randomized to undergo cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) or anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) for the purpose of determining whether or not patient age significantly influenced several neck-related clinical outcomes after 5 years. Neck Disability Index (NDI) scores, visual analogue scale (VAS) pain scores, Short Form-12 physical component summary (SF-12 PCS) scores, and percentage of patients with NDI success were comparable for CDA and ACDF patients in both age groups (<50 years or >50 years). Secondary surgery rates were found to significantly higher for patients aged <50 years in the ACDF, however, all other secondary surgery-related analyses revealed comparable values after 5 years.
