Randomized Comparison of Tape Versus Semi-Rigid and Versus Lace-Up Ankle Support in the Treatment of Acute Lateral Ankle Ligament Injury

186 patients with grade II or III acute lateral ankle ligament injuries were randomized to receive treatment with tape, a semi-rigid brace, or a lace up brace. The study was conducted in order to evaluate and compare the functional outcomes resulting from each intervention. Results from each treatment modality were found to be comparable, although a significant difference favouring the lace up brace in Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS) was found between the two braces.
