Is routine chemical thromboprophylaxis after total hip replacement really necessary in a Japanese population?

255 Japanese patients undergoing primary unilateral cementless total hip replacement (THR) were randomized into three groups to assess the efficacy of current prophylactic treatments for venous thromboembolisims (VTE). This study examined the the use of mechanical prophylactics separately and in conjunction with current pharmacological prophylactics (Fondaparinux and Enoxaparin). The results illustrated that use of mechanical prophylactics separately, as well as in conjunction with pharmacological prophylactics, produced similar results in preventing VTE.
