The AAHKS Clinical Research Award: Intraosseous Regional Prophylaxis Provides Higher Tissue Concentrations in High BMI Patients in Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Randomized Trial
J Arthroplasty. 2018 Jul;33(7S):S13-S18. doi: 10.1016/j.arth.2018.03.01322 patients with a BMI over 35 and scheduled for total knee arthroplasty were randomized to either intraosseous regional administration (IORA) vancomycin 500mg or intravenous vancomycin 15mg/kg. Intraoperative samples of subcutaneous fat and femoral bone were obtained and tested for concentrations of vancomycin. Results demonstrated significantly greater concentrations of vancomycin in the IORA group compared to the IV group in both subcutaneous fat samples and femoral bone samples.
