Efficacy and safety of intravenous tranexamic acid in total shoulder arthroplasty: A meta-analysis.

369 total shoulder arthroplasty patients from 5 randomized controlled trials were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis assessing the effectiveness and safety of tranexamic acid for blood loss control. Outcomes of interest included total blood loss, the incidence of adverse events, hemoglobin loss and fluctuation, drainage output, operative time, and length of stay. The results of the meta-analysis demonstrated the effectiveness and safety of tranexamic acid, with significantly less pooled blood loss, a lower likelihood of adverse events, less hemoglobin loss and fluctuation, and lower drainage output volume. No differences in pooled length of stay or operative time were observed.
