Intravenous iron and erythropoietin therapy for postoperative anemia among orthopedic surgery patients.
J Orthop Surg Res . 2023 Jul 18;18(1):510.This study involving patients undergoing orthopedic surgery investigated the effects of different treatments (IV iron monotherapy (n=30) and combined IV iron and recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO therapy; n=30)) compared to a control group (n=29). The primary outcome was the evaluation of postoperative hemoglobin concentrations, and secondary outcomes included various blood parameters on postoperative days 1, 3, and 7. The study concluded that the combined treatment did not effectively correct postoperative anemia and did not improve the mobilization of storage iron.
