Intravenous Dexmedetomidine for Delirium Prevention in Elderly Patients Following Orthopedic Surgery .
Intravenous dexmedetomidine for delirium prevention in elderly patients following orthopedic surgery: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
BMC Pharmacol Toxicol. 2025 Jan 17;26(1):8.Nine randomized controlled trials including 3159 elderly patients undergoing orthopedic surgery were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing intravenous dexmedetomidine vs. control (saline or propofol). Pooled outcomes of interest included incidence of postoperative delirium, length of hospital stay, visual analogue scale, and 30-day postoperative complications. Dexmedetomidine significantly reduced the incidence of postoperative delirium, with consistent effects across subgroups. There were no significant differences in hospital stay, pain scores, or postoperative complications. These findings suggest that dexmedetomidine has a protective effect against delirium in this population.
