Single-shot intraoperative local anaesthetic infiltration does not reduce morphine consumption after total hip arthroplasty: a double-blinded placebo-controlled randomized study

60 patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomized to receive single-shot intraoperative infiltration of ropivacaine alone or saline. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of ropivacaine alone in the management of morphine consumption and postoperative pain in these patients. Results indicated that no significant differences were observed between groups in 24-hour morphine consumption, cumulative morphine consumption, postoperative and chronic pain, hyperalgesia surfaces, surgical result, morphine-related side-effects or rehabilitation progress.
