Is intraoperative corticosteroid a good choice for postoperative pain relief in total joint arthroplasty? A meta-analysis of 11 randomized controlled trials

A meta-analysis of 11 randomized controlled trials evaluating patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty who compared intraoperative corticosteroid to control was performed. The primary outcome of interest was postoperative pain as measured by a visual analogue scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes of interest included postoperative morphine consumption, length of stay and incidence of infection. The corticosteroid group demonstrated demonstrated significantly reduced pain scores at rest and movement compared to the control group. The corticosteroid group also demonstrated reduced overall morphine consumption compared to the control group. No differences in length of stay or incidence of infection were found between groups.
