Randomized comparison of volar locking plates and intramedullary nails for unstable distal radius fractures
J Hand Surg Am. 2015 Jun;40(6):1095-10160 patients with a closed, displaced, unstable extra-articular distal radius fracture (AO type A) requiring fixation were randomized to be treated with either an intramedullary nail (IMN) or a volar locking plate (VLP). The purpose of this study was compare functional and radiographical results between the two treatment options over 2 years postoperatively. The IMN demonstrated significantly greater return of wrist extension in the early postoperative period (6 weeks) compared to the VLP group. At 2-year follow-up, no significant differences were observed between the two groups.
