The Assessment of Blood Loss During Total Knee Arthroplasty When Comparing Intravenous vs Intracapsular Administration of Tranexamic Acid

J Arthroplasty. 2016 Nov;31(11):2452-2457

131 patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty were randomized to tranexamic acid administration via intracapsular injection at the end of the procedure or intravenous injections before and after the procedure. The purpose of this study was to compare blood loss, hemoglobin levels, transfusion rate, and thromboembolic complication rate between groups over the first 3 days postoperatively. Results demonstrated no significant differences between groups in any outcome measure.
