Intramedullary and extramedullary fixations for the treatment of unstable femoral intertrochanteric fractures: a meta-analysis of prospective randomized controlled trials
Int Orthop. 2017 Feb;41(2):403-41311 randomized controlled trials were included in this meta-analysis comparing outcomes between intramedullary fixation and extramedullary fixation of unstable intertrochanteric fractures. Outcomes which demonstrated significant differences between fixation options included blood loss and postoperative mobility scores, both favour intramedullary implants. Otherwise, operative time, length of stay, transfusion rate, and incidence of complications did not significantly differ between intramedullary and extramedullary fixation devices.
