60 patients with isolated patellofemoral osteoarthritis were randomized to receive a single intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid or corticosteroid. Outcomes of interest included anterior knee pain, symptoms and function via the Kujala score, pain during injection, and adverse events. The results revealed significantly greater pain relief in the first week post-injection in favour of the corticosteroid group (p<0.05 for all), but no differences between groups beyond this time-point up to 6 months. No differences in Kujala score, adverse event rates, or pain during injection were observed. Results suggest that corticosteroid may provide early advantages in pain relief over hyaluronic acid and comparable pain relief up to 6 months post-injection.
