Comparison of the Effect of Intra-Articular, Periarticular, and Combined Injection of Analgesic on Pain Following Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Double-Blinded Randomized Clinical Trial
JB JS Open Access . 2022 Oct 7;7(4):e22.00074.One hundred and fifty-three patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty for severe knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive either a peri-articular injection (PA; n=51), intra-articular injection (IA; n=51), or a combination of peri- and intra-articular injections (PA + IA; n=51). The primary outcome of interest was morphine consumption 48 hours after surgery. Secondary outcomes such as pain using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), range of motion, Knee Society Score (KSS), and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) were assessed. Morphine consumption was significantly lower in the PA group when compared to IA, and the PI+IA group had significantly lower scores than the IA group.
