Intra-articular block compared with conscious sedation for closed reduction of ankle fracture-dislocations. A prospective randomized trial

OE Journal. 2013;1(2):78 J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2008 Apr;90(4):731-4.42 patients with an ankle fracture-dislocation, presenting to the emergency department, were randomized to receive either conscious sedation or an intra-articular lidocaine block for the reduction and for the application of a plaster splint. This study aimed to compare the analgesic efficacy between these techniques. The intra-articular lidocaine block was found to provide a similar degree and sufficient analgesia as the conscious sedation, to successfully undertake the closed reduction of ankle fracture-dislocations.
