Intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid versus plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) for knee osteoarthritis: a meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials : A meta-analysis.

Four hundred thirty-two patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive intra-articular PRGF injections (n=250) or hyaluronic acid injections (n=182). The primary outcome of interest was the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), including its subscales for pain, stiffness, and function. Outcomes were assessed at 4–6 months follow-up. Overall, the results of the study revealed that PRGF injections led to significantly better improvement in the WOMAC function subscale, with non-significant trends favoring PRGF in total WOMAC score, pain, and stiffness. These findings suggest that PRGF may offer enhanced functional outcomes over HA in the short-term management of knee osteoarthritis.
