Interscalene regional blocks superior to infusion pumps for postoperative pain control .
Assessment of Pain Relief Provided by Interscalene Regional Block and Infusion Pump After Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery
Arthroscopy. 2008 Jan;24(1):14-9. Epub 2007 Nov 8.76 patients, over 21 years of age, scheduled for arthroscopic subacromial decompression with or without arthroscopic rotator cuff repair were randomized into 4 treatment groups receiving either an intra-scalene block, or infusion pump, or a combination, or an intra-scalene block with a placebo infusion pump. The inter-scalene regional block provided superior immediate post-operative pain relief than infusion pumps after arthroscopic shoulder surgery. Infusion pumps alone were inadequate in providing pain relief after the inter-scalene blocks wore off.
