Preoperative home-based physical therapy versus usual care to improve functional health of frail older adults scheduled for elective total hip arthroplasty: a pilot randomized controlled trial

Arch Phys Med Rehabil. 2012 Apr;93(4):610-6. doi: 10.1016/j.apmr.2011.11.006. Epub 2012 Feb 24

30 frail, elderly patients who were scheduled for total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive either a 3-6 week home-based exercise program or standard preoperative measures to determine first, the feasibility of the home-exercise program and second, if there were differences in postoperative outcomes between the two therapies. Assessment at 6 weeks postoperatively indicated that the home-based exercise program was feasible.
