Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization versus myofascial release therapy in treatment of chronic neck pain: a randomized clinical trial.
BMC Musculoskelet Disord. 2023 Jun 3;24(1): 457.53 college students with chronic mechanical neck pain were randomized to receive 4 weeks of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (n=26) or myofascial release (n=27) targeting the upper trapezius. The outcomes of interest included pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), pain pressure threshold (PPT), and the Neck Disability Index (NDI), measured upon completion of treatment. No statistical differences were observed between the two groups, indicating a comparable clinical result with both treatments. Given the lack of a control group and the short duration of treatment, future trials are required to explore the effectiveness of these treatments for this patient population.
