Inhibition of alpha oscillations through serotonin-2A receptor activation underlies the visual effects of ayahuasca in humans
Eur Neuropsychopharmacol. 2016 23-Feb;():. 10.1016/j.euroneuro.2016.03.012A within-subject, crossover, double blind randomized controlled trial was conducted comparing ayahuasca to placebo, ketanserin, and ayahuasca with ketanserin in 12 healthy, experienced psychedelic users. EEG power analyses were performed while participants were under the under the effects of each of the treatments, as well as the Hallucinogen Rating Scale (HRS), Addition Research Center Inventory (ARCI), and Altered States of Consciousness (APS). Ayahuasca resulted in EEG power decreases in the delta, theta and alpha frequency bands. Pretreatment with ketanserin inhibited neuropsychological modifications.
