Nerve block of the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve in knee arthroscopy: a prospective, double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2013 Aug 21;95(16):1465-72. doi: 10.2106/JBJS.L.01534.68 patients to undergo simple knee arthroscopy were randomized into two groups to evaluate the effectiveness of a nerve block of the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve in comparison to a placebo. The study measured early post-operative measures including pain using the numerical rating scale (NRS), analgesic requirements, side effects, time to discharge and short-term Lysholm knee scores (assessment of a variety of knee conditions). The nerve blockade of the infrapatelar branch of the saphenous nerve demonstrated superior NRS scores and reduced nausea compared to the placebo group, additionally; patients receiving successful nerve block exhibited better Lysholm knee scores at 12 weeks.
