Comparison of Postoperative Alignment Using Fixed vs Individual Valgus Correction Angle in Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty With Lateral Bowing Femur

133 patients with lateral bowing of the femur who were scheduled for primary total knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive wither individual valgus correction angle (VCA) or fixed VCA. The purpose of this study was to determine if individualized femoral intramedullary alignment rod (based on preoperative VCA measurement) would associate with significantly different femoral, tibial, and overall limb alignment restoration when compared to fixed VCA (singular entry point for all patients) at two weeks postoperatively. Results demonstrated that patients in the individual group had significantly different femoral and overall limb alignment when compared to the fixed group. Tibial alignment was observed to be comparable between study groups.
