Effect of Increased Perioperative Communication Program on Short-term Outcomes in Elective Primary Knee Arthroplasty Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

70 patients undergoing elective primary unilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were randomized to receive an increased perioperative communication program or routine perioperative care. The outcomes of interest included postoperative pain, hospital length of stay, postoperative complications, and unplanned readmission rates within 30 days after discharge. as well as first mobilization time, post-discharge problems, and patient satisfaction with the intervention. Patients in the intervention group received structured educational and communication content through WhatsApp before and after surgery, along with continuous two-way communication access with healthcare professionals, whereas the control group received standard care alone. Outcomes were assessed during hospitalization and through 30-day postoperative follow-up. Overall, the results of the study revealed that patients enrolled in the increased perioperative communication program experienced lower postoperative pain levels, shorter hospital stays, fewer complications, and reduced post-discharge problems compared with standard care. These findings suggest that structured perioperative communication and education programs may improve early recovery and reduce complications after TKA.
