Manipulation under anaesthesia versus low stretch device in poor range of motion after TKA

Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc. 2013 Dec;21(12):2751-8. doi: 10.1007/s00167-012-2152-x. Epub 2012 Aug 3

64 patients with persistent knee stiffness following total knee arthroplasty were randomized to management with either manipulation under anaesthesia or a computer-controlled low load stretching device for 6 weeks, both in addition to 6 weeks of standardized physiotherapy. The purpose of this study was to compare the two groups after 6 weeks for active and passive knee range of motion, as well as pain, stiffness, and function using the Western Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scale. Both groups were observed to significantly improve in knee flexion ROM, as well as the subscales of the WOMAC. There were no statistically significant between-group differences observed. No complications were attributed to either intervention.
