Improved Elbow Function with Locking Plate vs Non-Locking Plate for Distal Humerus Fractures .
Locking versus non-locking plates in fixation of extra-articular distal humerus fracture: a randomized controlled study.
Int Orthop. 2020 Dec;44(12):2761-2767Sixty patients with distal humerus fractures were randomized to undergo surgical fixation with either a locking plates (n=30) or non-locking plates (n=30). The primary outcome of interest was the the Mayo elbow performance score (MEPS). Secondary outcomes of interest included surgical time, incidence of complications, elbow range of motion, and incidence of union at 3 and 6 months follow-up. MEPS and elbow range of motion were measured at 6 months and 1-year follow-up. Results of this randomized controlled trial demonstrated that only MEP at 1-year was statistically significantly different, in favour of the locking plate group(p=0.01). All other outcomes were not statistically significantly different between the 2 groups (p>0.05).
