Three-Year Changes in Bone Mineral Density Around the Knee After a Six-Month Course of Oral Alendronate Following Total Knee Arthroplasty
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2006 Feb;88(2):267-7260 female patients with osteoarthritis of the knee were randomised to receive either a 6-month treatment of oral alendronate following total knee arthroplasty, or no intervention treatment. The primary outcome examined was bone mineral density. The results indicated that significant increases in bone mineral density were observed up to 12 months in the oral alendronate intervention group. At the 36-month follow-up, comparable outcomes were seen between the two groups.
