The Efficacy of Peroxide Solutions in Decreasing Cutibacterium acnes Burden Around the Shoulder
J Am Acad Orthop Surg . 2022 Jan 1;30(1):e91-e98.A meta-analysis of seven studies, including 5 randomized controlled trials, evaluated the impact of using peroxide containing antiseptic solutions compared to control solutions on the burden of Cutibacterium acnes around the shoulder. When evaluating studies using peroxide products in addition to standard preparation, the addition of peroxide significantly diminished the rate of C acnes culture positivity. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that when applied at the time of surgery, peroxide solutions reduced C acnes burden compared to standard preparations. When given in the days leading up to surgery, peroxide solutions significantly reduced C acnes burden compared to placebo chlorhexidine gluconate solutions.
