Impact Of Erector Spinae Plane Block On Postoperative Recovery Quality In Spinal Surgery .
Impact of erector spinae plane block on postoperative recovery quality in spinal surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Eur Spine J . 2025 May;34(5):1877-1889.Eight randomized controlled trials including 578 patients undergoing spinal surgery were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing ESPB vs. conventional analgesia. Pooled outcomes of interest included 24-hour and 48-hour Quality of Recovery (QoR) scores, incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), and opioid consumption within 24 hours postoperatively. ESPB significantly improved QoR-15 and QoR-40 at 24 hours, both exceeding the minimal clinically important difference. ESPB also reduced PONV and opioid use. At 48 hours, improvements in QoR remained statistically significant but fell short of clinical relevance. These findings suggest ESPB enhances early postoperative recovery quality in spinal surgery.
