Nonoperative dynamic treatment of acute achilles tendon rupture: the influence of early weight-bearing on clinical outcome: a blinded, randomized controlled trial

60 patients with an Achilles tendon rupture and treated conservatively were randomized to either immediate or delayed weight-bearing. Immediate weight-bearing allowed patients to bear full weight starting on day one of treatment, whereas the other group underwent nonweight-bearing for 6 weeks after the injury. Follow-up was scheduled at 6 and 12 months. No differences in clinical outcome (Achilles tendon Total Rupture Scale), functional outcome, incidence of rerupture, or complications were noted between groups. Immediate weight-bearing appeared to not pose a risk to patients for detrimental effects in nonoperative management of an Achilles tendon rupture.
