Exclusive Author Interview

Dr. Mohit Bhandari discusses the under-representation of orthopaedics in popular evidence summary providers.

This research was conducted to determine the proportion of content relating to surgery and surgical specialties, particularly orthopaedics, within current evidence summary providers. Five resources (DynaMed, First Consult, PIER, UpToDate, and Clinical Evidence) were used for the comprehensive search for surgery-related content. Following the search, it was found that the 18% of the total content was related to surgery across the resources, with an emphasis on cardiac and paediatric surgery. Orthopaedics comprised a mere 2.04% of the total content provided by the resources. The most commonly featured subspecialties of orthopaedics were general orthopaedics, paediatric orthopaedics, and trauma.
