Comparison of intra-articular bupivacaine-morphine with bupivacaine-tenoxicam combinations on post-operative analgesia in patients with arthroscopic meniscectomy: a prospective, randomised study

240 patients undergoing arthroscopic partial meniscectomy were randomized to either a combination of 0.5% bupivacaine 100mg + 22mL tenoxicam 20mg, or a combination of 0.5% bupivacaine 10 mg + 22mL morphine 2mg. The purpose of this study was to compare the two treatments for their efficacy in postoperative pain control and safety during the first 24 postoperative hours. The findings indicated that patients who received bupivacaine+tenoxicam demonstrated significantly lower pain at 12 hours postoperative compared to bupivacaine+morphine. In addition, while bupivacaine+tenoxicam demonstrated a significantly earlier need for rescue analgesics, this group had a significantly smaller overall analgesic consumption over the first 24 postoperative hours and had fewer side effects compared to the bupivacaine+morphine group.
